TALK WITHOUT WORDS (4)
throat sounds -Tanya Tagaq
another great contrast between primitive sounds and expert skills.
I think the continuum set-up was still inconsistent,
for instance if it is going to represent 'talk without words' all the words have to go;
throat sounds | vocal dynamics | sound mimicry | speech mimicry |
gargling ... | sound poetry ... | beatbox .... | idioglossia ... |
there is now halfway a shift from internal to external (mimicry).
human beatbox -Doug E Fresh,
(I think a lot more can be said and done about the topic and there are probably lots more good examples but I'll leave it here, feel free to contribute)

TALK WITHOUT WORDS (3)
- reflexes
- babbling
- coherent speech
- primal scream
- throat sounds
- word -salad
- speaking in tongues
- idioglossia
- pseudo language
- scat singing
- sound poetry
I thought this time I'd start with a primal scream right after coherent speech, like a teenage angst; (speaking the language perfectly but only technical, so the expressive part is like an amorph emotional burp).
The continuum now represents the increase of voluntary control.
I've positioned word salad earlier than before because it represents also a lack of control, only not the emotional/ intuitive but the technical/ executive.
Mike Patton (moonchild)
the 'primal sceaming' in combination with the music stand is interestingly strange.
I think because it hints at the difference between how musicians and nonmusicians express emotions in music.
Since 'split-brain patients' roughly showed the right side of the brain to be holistic and intuitive and the left analytic or logical it would be reasonable to assume that skilled musicians show greater activity in the right brain.
But the opposite is true. " Melodies are composed of an ordered series of pitches, and hence should be processed by the left hemisphere rather than the right"

TALK WITHOUT WORDS (2)
- throat sounds
- sound poetry
- scat singing
- pseudo language
- idioglossia
- speaking in tongues
- word -salad
- coherent speech
Yamatsuka Eye and hanatarash
scat al jarreau
idioglossia, twin talk
Probably everybody has seen this but it's an example that shows the continuum in action in that they imitate conversation before they know the words.
One question about the continuum concept that comes to mind is when one looks at artists that produce throatsounds like Eye,(or like asemic scribbles) is wether they are tapping into a state that they acquired as a kid,
or did they learn a new state by for instance looking and imitating kids or animals.
In the latter case shouldn't they be positioned after coherent speech ?
If they are put before coherent speech it implies idealizing an earlier state of development, or a rejection of coherent language, instead of an addition to coherent language.
Maybe insert a 'post linguistic grunt' position.
Another one is the position of word-salad.
Put after pseudo language the acquired syntax has suddenly disappeard,
but positioned before pseudo language it's the vocabulary that disappears in the next step.
Francis E Dec. somewhere between wordsalad and coherent speech.
